Big idea

Race becomes theology when racial identity determines who God favors, who possesses truth, who belongs to God’s people, or how Scripture is allowed to be interpreted.

Learning objectives

  • Recognize racialized theological claims.
  • Distinguish ethnic identity from ethnic supremacy.
  • Explain biblical election without racial superiority.
  • Evaluate identity-based theological movements Christocentrically.
  • Reject supremacy without flattening historical differences in power.

Primary text

Ephesians 2:14–16 — “Christ breaks down hostility and reconciles divided peoples to God in one body through the cross.”

Scaffolded Scriptures

  • Genesis 12:3 — Abraham’s election has the nations in view.
  • Deuteronomy 7:7–8 — Election is rooted in God’s love, not inherent greatness.
  • Amos 9:7 — Election does not create immunity from judgment.
  • John 8:39 — Jesus challenges ancestry claims without faithful obedience.
  • Romans 2:28–29 — External identity alone is insufficient.
  • Romans 9:6 — Covenant identity cannot be reduced simplistically to ancestry.
  • Revelation 5:9 — The Lamb redeems people from every people and nation.

Teaching movements

Movement 1

Election Is Not Racial Superiority — Biblical election is grace and vocation, not proof of inherent human superiority.

Movement 2

Chosen Does Not Mean Unaccountable — The prophets repeatedly judge the covenant people.

Movement 3

Race Becomes Theology When It Controls Interpretation — Warning signs include claims that only one ethnicity can understand Scripture or that God’s central purpose is racial dominance.

Movement 4

Oppression Does Not Automatically Produce Perfect Theology — Marginalized communities can see truths dominant groups miss, but no social location is infallible.

Movement 5

Supremacy Can Wear Different Clothes — The histories and power dynamics differ, but no ethnicity possesses inherent spiritual superiority.

Movement 6

Christ Redefines the People of God Around Himself — Gentiles receive covenant blessing through the Messiah, not by discovering hidden racial superiority.

Movement 7

The Cross Kills Boasting — Grace destroys claims to spiritual superiority.

Movement 8

New Creation Is Not One Race Winning — Revelation ends with the nations around the Lamb.

Key terms / word study

Partiality / prosōpolēmpsia
Unjust favoritism, rejected as incompatible with faith in the Lord of glory.

Christ at the center

Race matters, but race is not Lord. Christ is Lord, and every identity must be interpreted beneath Him.

Common error to avoid

Do not answer racial supremacy with mirror-image racial supremacy.

Reflect

  1. What is the difference between ethnic identity and racial supremacy?
  2. How is election misunderstood?
  3. How does the cross undermine racial boasting?

Practice

Evaluate statements such as “Only our ethnicity can understand Scripture” or “God chose our race because it is superior.” Identify any legitimate concern beneath the claim, the theological error, relevant Scripture, and a Christ-centered response.

Remember

Race matters. Race is not Lord.
