Big idea

The biblical story begins with God as Creator, creation as good, and humanity as God’s image-bearing representatives within His world.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the theological significance of creation.
  • Define the image of God as dignity and vocation.
  • Recognize creation as the foundation for later themes of temple, kingdom, and new creation.
  • Reject a view of salvation that treats creation itself as disposable.

Primary text

Genesis 1:1–31 — God creates, orders, blesses, and declares the world very good; humanity is created in His image.

Scaffolded Scriptures

  • Genesis 2:7–15 — Humanity is formed for embodied life, vocation, and sacred presence.
  • Psalm 8:3–8 — Humanity is crowned with glory and given stewardship.
  • Colossians 1:15–17 — All creation is through, for, and held together in Christ.
  • Revelation 21:1–5 — The biblical hope is renewed creation, not the abandonment of creation.

Teaching movements

Movement 1

God Is First — The Bible begins with God, not human need.

Movement 2

Creation Is Good — Material creation is not evil or spiritually inferior.

Movement 3

Humanity Bears God’s Image — Image includes worth, representation, vocation, and stewardship.

Movement 4

Eden Is Sacred Space — God’s presence with humanity becomes a trajectory toward tabernacle, temple, Christ, Spirit, and new creation.

Movement 5

Creation Establishes the Goal — Redemption restores and renews what sin disrupts.

Key terms / word study

Image / tselem
A representation; in Genesis, humanity is appointed to reflect God’s rule within creation.

Christ at the center

Christ is both Creator and the perfect image of the invisible God; redemption restores humanity in relation to Him.

Reflect

  1. Why does creation matter for the doctrine of salvation?
  2. What does image-bearing mean beyond human dignity?
  3. How does new creation complete Genesis 1 rather than reject it?

Practice

List five truths about God, humanity, and the world established before sin appears in Genesis 3.

Remember

The Bible begins with a good creation, not an escape plan.
