Big idea

God formalizes His promise to Abraham through covenant, confirming offspring, land, and blessing while teaching Abraham to trust divine promise rather than human control.

Learning objectives

  • Explain covenant in Genesis 15 and 17.
  • Describe the tension between promise and delay.
  • Explain circumcision as covenant sign.
  • Trace the promised seed through Isaac.

Primary text

Genesis 15:1–18 — God confirms offspring and land and binds Himself covenantally to Abraham.

Scaffolded Scriptures

  • Genesis 17:1–14 — Circumcision functions as covenant sign.
  • Genesis 21:1–5 — Isaac’s birth demonstrates divine faithfulness.
  • Genesis 22:15–18 — The seed and nations promise is reaffirmed after the testing of Abraham.
  • Romans 4:18–21 — Paul highlights Abraham’s faith in God’s promise.
  • Galatians 3:16 — The seed promise reaches its climax in Christ.

Teaching movements

Movement 1

Promise Meets Impossibility — Age, barrenness, and delay make fulfillment depend on God.

Movement 2

Covenant Confirms Promise — God binds Himself to the promised future.

Movement 3

Human Attempts to Control Promise Fail — Genesis repeatedly contrasts divine promise with human manipulation.

Movement 4

The Sign Does Not Replace the Promise — Circumcision marks covenant identity but is not the substance of faithfulness itself.

Movement 5

Isaac Carries the Line — The chosen line narrows while the global promise remains.

Movement 6

Genesis 22 Intensifies the Story — The beloved son, provision, and reaffirmed seed promise create deep canonical resonance.

Key terms / word study

Covenant / berit
A solemn, binding relationship of promise and obligation established by God.

Christ at the center

Christ is the climactic Seed of Abraham; the covenant promise reaches beyond one family toward worldwide blessing through Him.

Reflect

  1. Why does delay matter in Abraham’s story?
  2. How does covenant strengthen promise?
  3. What is the difference between covenant sign and covenant substance?

Practice

Compare Genesis 12, 15, 17, and 22. List what stays the same and what becomes clearer in each covenant episode.

Remember

The promise depends finally on God’s faithfulness, not human control.
