Big idea
At Sinai, the redeemed people are formed for holy covenant life. Law does not earn redemption; it shapes the life of those already rescued by God.
Learning objectives
- Explain the order redemption → covenant → law.
- Describe Israel as kingdom of priests and holy nation.
- Explain law as covenant instruction.
- Relate Sinai to new covenant obedience in Christ.
Primary text
Exodus 19:3–6 — Israel is called God’s treasured possession, kingdom of priests, and holy nation.
Scaffolded Scriptures
- Exodus 20:1–17 — The commandments begin with the God who already delivered Israel.
- Deuteronomy 6:4–9 — Love for God stands at the heart of covenant obedience.
- Leviticus 19:2 — Israel’s holiness reflects God’s holiness.
- Matthew 5:17 — Jesus fulfills Law and Prophets.
- Romans 8:3–4 — The righteous requirement is fulfilled in those who walk by the Spirit.
Teaching movements
Movement 1
Grace Before Command — The law begins with the reminder of deliverance from Egypt.
Movement 2
A Priestly People — Israel is to represent God among the nations.
Movement 3
Law Shapes Covenant Life — Worship, justice, sexuality, economics, family, and community all come under God’s rule.
Movement 4
Holiness Is Relational — Israel is set apart because the holy God dwells among them.
Movement 5
Law Also Exposes Sin — Human inability becomes increasingly visible.
Movement 6
The Story Needs More Than Tablets — Prophets will later promise new heart, Spirit, and internalized law.
Key terms / word study
- Holy / qadosh
- Set apart for God; holiness reflects belonging, moral character, worship, and covenant vocation.
Christ at the center
Jesus fulfills the law, bears covenant curse, inaugurates new covenant, and gives the Spirit so obedience flows from renewed life rather than external code alone.
Reflect
- Why is law not a way for Israel to earn rescue?
- What does kingdom of priests mean?
- Why does Sinai eventually create longing for heart transformation?
Practice
Read Exodus 20 and group the commandments under love of God and love of neighbor. Then connect that structure to Jesus’ summary of the law.
Remember
Grace rescues; covenant identifies; law shapes holy life.
