Big idea

The resurrection is not merely proof that Jesus survives death; it is the beginning of the new creation and the decisive defeat of death.

Learning objectives

  • Explain resurrection as bodily victory, not mere spiritual survival.
  • Define Christ as firstfruits.
  • Connect resurrection to new creation and mission.
  • Distinguish resurrection from resuscitation.

Primary text

1 Corinthians 15:20–22 — Christ is risen as the firstfruits of those who sleep; Adam brought death, Christ brings resurrection life.

Scaffolded Scriptures

  • Daniel 12:2 — Israel’s Scriptures anticipate bodily resurrection.
  • John 20:24–29 — The risen Jesus is embodied and identifiable.
  • Romans 6:4 — Resurrection creates a new pattern of life for believers.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:42–49 — Resurrection involves transformed embodied life.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 — New creation reality is already breaking in through Christ.

Teaching movements

Movement 1

Resurrection Is Not Resuscitation — Jesus does not merely return to ordinary mortal life.

Movement 2

Death Is Defeated — The last enemy begins to lose its claim.

Movement 3

Firstfruits — Christ’s resurrection is the beginning and guarantee of the harvest to come.

Movement 4

New Creation Begins in the Middle of History — The future has invaded the present.

Movement 5

The Body Matters — Christian hope is embodied resurrection, not permanent disembodied escape.

Movement 6

Resurrection Creates Mission — The risen King sends witnesses into the world.

Key terms / word study

Firstfruits / aparchē
The first portion of a harvest that anticipates and guarantees the rest.

Christ at the center

The risen Christ is not only alive; He is the beginning of the renewed humanity and creation God has promised.

Reflect

  1. Why is bodily resurrection important?
  2. What does firstfruits communicate?
  3. How is Christian hope bigger than “going to heaven”?

Practice

Compare Adam and Christ in 1 Corinthians 15. List what comes through each representative.

Remember

Resurrection means new creation has already begun.
